Lead Teaching Assistant
I was the Political Science Lead Teaching Assistant for academic years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. My purpose as Lead TA was to help new TAs in the Department of Political Science prepare for their teaching duties at the University of Washington (and to help them survive their first quarter as a TA). Throughout the year, I was also the point-person for most things TA-related and a colleague graduate students could come to with ideas, questions, and concerns about teaching.
Main tasks:
Innovations:
Main tasks:
- planned the orientation for new departmental teaching assistants;
- interviewed TA applicants with the Director of Academic Services;
- liaised between TAs and the department;
- designed the "Teaching College Political Science" course and taught it to new TAs in the Autumn quarter.
Innovations:
- During my time as the Lead Teaching Assistant, I put together a departmental TA Handbook, compiling useful articles and resources for TAs in one location.
- I also served as a discussion section observer. I would attend fellow TAs' sections and provide them with detailed feedback and suggestions.
